Even after selling a portion of its business to Google, HTC is not completely out, as it continues to work on virtual reality devices. According to a new report from DigiTimes, during MWC 2022, HTC Asia-Pacific General Manager claimed that the company is working on a high-end metaverse phone.
Aside from that, the company announced its Viverse brand at its booth, which will include virtual reality (VR) headsets and other VR and augmented reality (AR) offerings.
Customers who want to use VR and AR apps will be interested in the new HTC metaverse phone. At the event, the company did not reveal any details about the device’s specifications or release date.

To refresh your memory, HTC’s most recent phones were the Exodus 1 in 2018 and the Exodus 1s in 2019. Both models were designed for people who were interested in Blockchain and cryptocurrency technology. None of these, however, ever made it to the general public.
The company also showed off new developments in 5G, in-car VR, and location-based entertainment at MWC 2022.
The Vive Browser, Vive Connect for simulated experiences, and the Vive Guardian VR tool will all be available in the Viverse.
“Viverse provides seamless experiences accessible on any device, anywhere, and is enabled by HTC’s long-term investments in virtual and augmented reality, high-speed connectivity, AI, and blockchain technologies,” Cher Wang, HTC’s Co-Founder and Chairwoman, said in a statement.
HTC sold a large portion of its smartphone operations to Google for $1.1 billion in 2017, while also merging its smartphone and virtual reality divisions. It did confirm at the time that it had no plans to leave the smartphone market. However, we have yet to see a single smartphone from the company that is aimed at the general public.
