The PlayStation community has been clamoring for an all-black version of the next-generation console since its release. Sony has remained relatively silent on the topic but has made progress in terms of colour variants for the console’s peripherals, such as Dualsense variants.
The consoles themselves, on the other hand, are only available in the standard colour scheme, with no black option. Sony recently patented its faceplate design, indicating that new colour options are on the way. The patent was filed on November 16, 2021, almost a year after the console was released, according to OPAttack.
Sony files a patent for PS5 faceplates; could an all-black console be on the way?

PS5 owners had to rely on third-party companies like Dbrand for all-black consoles until now. Dbrand had been selling a matte-black faceplate variant for the PS5 despite knowing that doing so could result in legal action from Sony. This eventually happened, and Dbrand had to remove their faceplates from the market.
With Sony filing patents for their faceplate, a slew of new PS5 colour options appears to be on the way. It’s unclear whether this is a one-off limited edition console or custom faceplates that will be sold separately; in any case, the fact that Sony will be offering more colours to their users is a positive development.
Despite the global chip shortage, Sony’s PS5 has been a huge success so far, becoming the company’s fastest-selling console in history. In the coming years, it will be interesting to see how Sony approaches colour variants for the PS5.
