Apple announced its new M1 custom silicon last year. The new chip was announced, and it was first seen in the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini. In two years, the iPhone maker will switch from Intel-based Macs to its custom silicon. It’s been almost a year, and some Apple products have debuted with the custom M1 chip. According to reports, the upcoming MacBook Pro 2021 will feature an M1X processor. Meanwhile, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will meet its transition goals by the end of 2022.
Apple will “barely hit its two-year timeline” for transitioning the Mac lineup to Apple Silicon, according to Gurman’s weekly newsletter Power On. The 13-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, Mac mini, and 24-inch iMac with an M1 chip have all been released so far.
The M1X chip is expected to debut in the upcoming 2021 MacBook Pro, while the upgraded M2 chip will debut in the 2022 MacBook Air. A high-end Mac mini is also rumored to be in development. According to Gurman, the iMac will be fully transitioned by the end of 2022. Late next year, Apple is expected to release a redesigned Mac Pro with Apple Silicon.
He also confirmed that rumors about the final Intel-based Mac Pro are correct. It’s said to have a Xeon W-3300 processor. The new Mac Pro will also be redesigned and will have a smaller form factor. Apple is developing chips with 20-core and 40-core configurations, which are likely to be used in the smaller Mac Pro, according to Gurman.
The Mac Pro’s update cycle has yet to be officially announced by Apple. Gurman, on the other hand, has a fairly good track record so far. Based on this, it’s safe to assume that the transition will be completed by the end of 2022.
