Sony PlayStation VR For PS5 Will Be Releasing in 2022

The next generation of gaming is well underway, and Sony has done a fantastic job with the PS5, particularly in terms of ensuring a steady supply of both first- and third-party games for the console. Simultaneously, Sony’s ambitions to push the envelope even further and usher in a new era of VR gaming remain strong, as the company appears to be planning a PlayStation VR headset release in 2022.

The PS VR headset for the PS4 was a moderate success, with around 5 million units sold (as of 2020). While it is dwarfed by the number of PS4 and now PS5 units sold, VR appears to have the potential to be the next gaming frontier.

According to Bloomberg, Sony intends to release the next-gen PlayStation VR during the “holiday period next year,” which would be late 2022.

Should PlayStation VR fans be excited about the PS5?

While the early years of virtual reality technology were not exactly promising, it has since begun to look a lot more promising. Half-Life: Alyx was released in 2020, and it is still considered a watershed moment for virtual reality technology, with developers only scratching the surface.

Both critics and fans praised PlayStation VR for the PS4, and many thought it was a worthwhile addition to their home console-setup. There has been no information released about the PlayStation VR for the PS5 in terms of pricing or design.

Controllers for the PlayStation VR for PS5
PlayStation VR controllers for PS5 are already look more impressive.

So far, PlayStation has only revealed the design of the PS5 VR controllers, which is noticeably better than the original. The controller’s almost gauntlet-like design appears to be more tactile and responsive than the original PS3 Move-like controllers.

As it stands, players can still use the original PlayStation VR on their next-gen PS5 to play a variety of fantastic PlayStation games. The next-gen version of PlayStation VR is expected to be a significant technological leap forward, giving the massive PlayStation fanbase a compelling reason to invest in virtual reality.
