According to what is learned from the LG Display VP, the company will present a flexible 48 ″ smart TV during the next CES 2021.
During CES 2021, LG Display will unveil a new 48-inch cinema-quality OLED (CSO) screen. The peculiarity of this product is that it can flex: yes, you read that right. The company said in a press release that this ” paper-thin ” panel can be folded up to a radius of curvature of 1,000 millimeters and still provide ” a uniform viewing distance from the center to the edge of the screen .” According to LG Display, “ the response time is 0.1 milliseconds (ms), the refresh rate is 120Hz per second and it has a wide variable refresh rate ranging from 40Hz to 120Hz ”.
LG Display: a monitor designed for TV and gaming
Curved TVs have never been very popular on the market. According to many reviews, the curvature of monitors sometimes forces users to sit in a particular position for the best viewing experience and this – you know – is not exactly the best when you want to relax while watching a movie or TV series.
However, curved computer panels are very popular with gamers: this is because the viewer is usually seated directly in the center of the screen and only tens of centimeters away. LG Display hopes to provide computer users and gamers with the best of both worlds. The South Korean manufacturer is therefore working on a smart TV model that can be folded for games and flattened when watching TV or on-demand content on your sofa. This TV can also produce sounds by vibrating the screen instead of the help of classic traditional speakers.
This new screen will also use the CSO technology of LG Display for sound reproduction. The CSO screen was first shown at CES in 2017: it boasts an exciter installed behind the display that vibrates the OLED screen itself, thus generating sound waves and making the display… a speaker.
The vibrating module featured in the new cinema-quality 48-inch foldable OLED display is only 0.6mm thick. This is a huge improvement considering the previous one was only 9mm. Chang-ho Oh, executive vice president and head of LG Display’s TV business unit, said at a news conference:
LG Display’s 48-inch flexible CSO display is optimized for gaming. Maximize the use of advanced technology and create another level of immersive experience. In other words, it provides players with the best gaming environment.
