On Thursday (30), Xiaomi presented its new line of smartphones for the global market, with the arrival of the Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro, and the most basic version also has a new feature coming from MediaTek.

Taking advantage of the launch of the Redmi Note 9, the Taiwanese chipmaker introduced the new member of the Helio G line, this one focused on players looking for gaming performance, the  Helio G85. The new SoC brings subtle changes in relation to its predecessor, Helio G80, however, welcome to strengthen the brand name in the competitive middle segment.

Like its predecessor, the Helio G85 is based on the 12nm manufacturing process, bringing a configuration with 2 Cortex-A75 cores running at 2.0GHz plus 6 Cortex A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. As a graphics chip, both also bring the GPU Mali G52 MC2, however, the new model from Mediatek has a slightly higher clock, that of  1,000MHz (against 950 Mhz of Helio G80).

In addition, the Helio G85 also features HyperEngine technology, which ensures that the chip reaches maximum performance during games, offering better connection conditions, latency, and fluids for games.

In terms of compatibility, MediaTek’s new SoC features an ISP (Image Signal Processor) with support for up to a 48 MP lens or two 16 MP sensors, 4G connectivity, WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, in addition to supporting LPDDR4X memory up to 8 GB and smartphones with a maximum resolution of 2520×1080.

According to MediaTek, the Helio G85 hits the market to compete with  Samsung’s Exynos 9611 and Qualcomm ‘s  Snapdragon 665, where according to benchmarks made using the AnTuTu tool, the company’s new SoC takes a 16% advantage to 21% over competitors.

For now, only the  Redmi Note 9 (which reaches the market from US $ 199) will be equipped with the Helio G85, however, it is expected that in the future other devices will arrive with the new MediaTek SoC.
