Tesla patented a new type of electrode to be used within the battery cells of their electric cars. The aim of the new battery electrodes is to be more durable and cheaper to produce. According to the information, the new NCA electrode may be used in the future by the company.
Previously, Tesla would have patented an electrode using a new generation “monocrystal” NMC 532 cathode and a new advanced electrolyte. According to the company, it is believed that battery cells can last more than a million kilometers when used in electric vehicles.
Tesla’s new patent is entitled ” Method for Synthesizing Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum Electrodes “, or method for synthesizing nickel-cobalt-aluminum electrodes in Portuguese.
Tesla scientists developed a two-step synthesis process, pairing single-nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) crystal electrodes. This means that the next cars of the brand may have a longer range with a lower manufacturing price. Tesla has not yet officially announced plans to register the new patent.
Internal sources related to the auto industry said the new NCA electrodes should allow Tesla to achieve an energy density similar to or better than NMC batteries. Tesla is currently working on a battery project to produce its own battery cells using technology developed by its teams.
